Over the last 15 years the localisation industry has come to grips with its need to scale efficiently. Process automation and novel technologies have allowed localisation activity to move from the desktop via the server into the corporate cloud. Machine Translation is being deployed more widely in a variety of contexts. Authoring has been streamlined to provide content appropriate to varied delivery mechanisms. Our customers now search the web and social media for information on our products and services. Symantec for example has scaled its operation from 80M words in 2005 to over 1000M words in 2009, with controlled costs and an 8 fold increase in headcount efficiency. However, challenges still exist in search, modality, confidence,user-generated content, social web and personalisation. These challenges reflect an increased focus on consumer contribution, utilisation and sentiment.
